Europe’s last wild river: the Tagliamento

Natural setting

The Tagliamento is the last Alpine river in Europe to retain the natural dynamics and morphological complexity that characterised many Alpine watercourses before the hydraulic works carried out by man in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Its international natural value stems from the fact that it is not only a reference ecosystem for the Alps, but also a model river ecosystem, thanks to natural dynamics that remain largely unaffected by human intervention.

Spending a holiday at our resort means experiencing a rare and precious natural environment up close.

An ecological corridor of great interest

The Tagliamento river rises at the Mauria Pass, 1,195 metres above sea level, and flows through four distinct types of landscape: the mountain area of the Carnic and Julian Alps, the Pre-Alpine belt, the upper and lower Friulian plain and, finally, the coastal area, where it flows into the Gulf of Venice between Lignano Sabbiadoro and Bibione.

Its role as a link between the Alpine and Mediterranean environments creates a particularly rich environmental gradient, with climatic changes linked to variations in rainfall and temperature. As a result, its course preserves a great variety of habitats, especially along its upper and middle reaches.

The Tagliamento is a true natural bridge between the Alps and the Adriatic. Its distinctive braided-channel morphology fosters numerous microhabitats, in which flowing water and the land environment influence each other.

A unique natural heritage

The uniqueness of the Tagliamento river stems from a number of key features:

  • An important nature corridor ensuring environmental continuity between the plains and the mountains.
  • A wide floodplain, where the main hydrogeological, morphological and ecological processes typical of a river ecosystem remain unaltered.
  • A high richness of species and habitats.
  • Some of the most threatened habitat types in Europe, such as gravel bars, vegetated islands and riparian woodlands.

These features play an essential role in the biodiversity of the area. The river distributes sediment and plant fragments according to the strength of the current, helping to form vegetated islands and creating ideal conditions for an extraordinary variety of animal and plant species.

Along the middle course of the Tagliamento, typically Alpine species live alongside species characteristic of the Pre-Alpine belt and the plains, making this environment all the more precious and surprising.

An experience close to nature

Choosing a holiday at our resort on the Tagliamento river means immersing yourself every day in an authentic landscape, where nature still follows its own rhythms. It is the ideal place for anyone wishing to discover one of the most fascinating and best-preserved rivers in Europe, enjoying a relaxing experience in close contact with a natural heritage of inestimable value.
